The Certification Committee assists HR professionals interested in obtaining and/or retaining their desired HR certification through study preparation groups, opportunities for recertification credits and programs of scholarships and sponsorships. Professional certifications are offered through SHRM (SHRM-SCP/CP certifications) or Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI) (PHR, SPHR, GPHR certifications). 

WHRMA provides HR professionals avenues to maintain their professional certifications by engaging in professional development activities that relate to the behavioral competencies and HR knowledge identified in the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge™. SHRM created ways individuals can maintain their SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credential holders can earn PDCs: Advance Your Education, Advance Your Organization, and Advance Your Profession.

Many WHRMA members have had questions regarding their current HR Certification and what their next steps should be, with both SHRM and HRCI offering multiple HR designations. Please find some tools that will provide information to assist with the decision making process.

  • Maintain Your SHRM Credential with Recertification:

    Because the HR profession is constantly changing and evolving, it is important for certified professionals to continually update their HR competencies and knowledge. Achieving certification as a SHRM

    Certified Professional (SHRM-CP®) or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP®) is the first step. Recertifying demonstrates your commitment to the profession, to your organization, and to yourself through lifelong education and professional development.

    HR professionals obtain recertification by engaging in professional development activities that relate to the behavioral competencies and HR knowledge identified in the SHRM BoCK. The incorporation of competencies into the SHRM BoCK greatly expands the range of activities that will qualify for professional development credits (PDCs). To recertify and maintain your credential, you must earn 60 PDCs every three years, or retake the certification exam.

    SHRM created three avenues by which SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credential holders can earn PDCs:

    • Advance Your Education through continuing education activities such as conferences, seminars, webcasts, e-learning, chapter programs and more.

    • Advance Your Organization through supervisor-endorsed work projects that meet or support organizational goals and demonstrate or advance capabilities in one or more of the HR competencies.

    • Advance Your Profession through thought leadership and volunteer activities that contribute to the development of the HR profession and the community.

Once I've Obtained My Certification, How Do I Maintain It?

HRCI requires PHR and SPHR holders to either retake and pass the certification exam every three years, or obtain 60 recertification credits during the three years after passing the exam. SHRM will also require SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP holders to do the same.  You can attend approved meetings, conferences, and events as one way to earn recertification credits. All of WHRMA's professional development programs are eligible for Recertification Credit Hours (RCH). Information on each event will list the number of credit hours you can earn for attending the program. Look for the HRCI "Approved for Credit" symbol and the SHRM approved logo on the "Events" page next to those events approved to receive the appropriate recertification credit.
