How Does the New York Paid Family Leave Affect your organization?

I had recently sent out an email to the membership notifying you of some details of the NYS Paid Family Leave. The web is full of information from the employee's perspective but I could find virtually no information from the employer's perspective...

Questions have come up as to whether companies should start deducting contributions from employee paychecks effective July 1, 2017 or wait thisl January 1, 2018. The answer to that question is that it is allowable provided the employee meets all the benchmarks for eligibility. If the employee will be eligible on 1/1/2018, companies cannot anticipate that and start deducting the contributions starting July 1st.

Even if you aren't planning on deducting the contributions from paychecks now, I would recommend that companies start having the discussion with your statutory Disability Benefits carrier so that, first, you know they will continue to offer disability insurance and how the PFL will work in conjunction.

Considering some of the confusion that still exists on the PFL WHRMA welcomes members to share their experiences in the comments section. Hopefully we can help each other navigate through this initiative by sharing your experiences and knowledge.

    Best, Lena
